Abstract

|
Airway mucus is pivotal for physiological defense against invading particles, chemicals and pathogenic microbes. However, any abnormality of mucins can cause altered airway physiology and impair host defenses leading to severe diseases e.g. asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Therefore, in this review, we discussed the recent progress in the field of research on the regulation of the gene expression, production and secretion of airway mucins, in order to make us try to develop the novel efficacious drug candidate for controlling the pathologic hypersecretion of airway mucins.
